7 Questions to Ask When Replacing Your HVAC System
If you’re having problems with your heating and cooling system, your first step is to have your system inspected. Arthur Hagar has more than 65 years of experience in the Fort Worth area and we will be able to tell you what the problem is and if repair or replacement is your best option. If you’ve had your system for 15 to 20 years, chances are you need a brand new system. Arthur Hagar can help you find a new unit and install it, but it’s important to consider these questions first:
1. What size system do I need?
Don’t assume your old system was the right size, especially if you’ve built an addition to your home since the last system was installed. It’s also important to know that bigger doesn’t always mean better. A contractor like Arthur Hagar will be able to do the calculations to determine the right system for your home.
2. Will my current ductwork fit my new system?
Your ductwork should be inspected for problems of its own, and then sized to your new HVAC system. Ducts that are too small will mean that your system works harder to heat or cool your home. Ducts that are too big means you may not feel the system working in the first place. It may feel like Goldilocks and the three bears, but you need the right ductwork for your new HVAC system to be effective!
3. Should I replace all my HVAC equipment at once?
The short answer is yes. It’s important that all parts of your HVAC system work together, which can be hard to guarantee when replacing one part of a system at a time. A mismatched system may not perform as well as one built to work together.
4. What type of system should I get?
Ask your contractor for recommendations and do your own research. You might be surprised by how many options you have! 5. What is the SEER rating of your new unit?
SEER is the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating of any cooling system. It measures the unit’s cooling output against the amount of energy it uses. The rating should be at least 13. You can also look for HSPF – Heating Seasonal Performance Factor – on any heat pumps. HSPF scores should be at least 7.7. Systems with higher SEER and HSPF ratings will cost more upfront, but they will save you on operating costs down the road.
6. Are there any rebates or tax credits for installing a new system?
You might be able to get money back for improving the energy efficiency of your home with a new heating or cooling system. Federal tax credits can go as high as $500 or more, depending on the equipment you choose. This might help cover the cost of a unit with a higher SEER rating! You can investigate incentives based on your location and the unit you plan to buy.
7. Does the company offer any financing options?
Arthur Hagar knows that buying a new system can cause real financial strain, which is why we offer financing options. Call us today for more information!
